Pete Hegseth's future as Pentagon chief at center of lame-duck defense battle

The Hill · Oct 19, 2026

Senate Democrats are quietly floating Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's ouster after the Nov. 3 election as the political price for cooperation on defense bills in the lame-duck session, per Senate sources, and may have some GOP support; they are threatening to hold up the emergency defense funding the White House requested in June, regular Pentagon funding that expires Dec. 11, and a waiver for Navy secretary nominee Hung Cao. Sen. Tim Kaine said Hegseth's departure could set the stage for more bipartisan cooperation on must-pass bills such as the NDAA and the defense appropriations bill; Sen. Brian Schatz said that if the Iran war is over the opportunity for bipartisanship on those bills is there, but if not "it's going to be extremely difficult"; a GOP senator called pushing Hegseth out "a bridge too far," and key Senate Republicans say they don't see Trump agreeing.
